Stress Colitis at the Ranch

Stress colitis is when a dog’s digestive system reacts to stress, usually from a new environment, changes in routine, or anxiety. The most common signs are loose or runny stool, and sometimes small traces of blood. While this can be concerning, it’s usually not dangerous, and most dogs recover quickly once they feel comfortable and settled.

This often happens with dogs who are boarding for the first time, as new environments can be overwhelming. Some weekends at the Ranch are calm, while others may be a little busier—but we always strive to keep every pup as relaxed as possible.

Here’s how we help:

  • Familiar faces: When possible, we pair dogs with friends who are also boarding, helping them feel less alone.
  • Thoughtful kennel placement: We consider each pup’s personality and needs, whether they prefer a spot by the door, tucked in the back, or with access to a run.
  • Extra attention: For pups who are slower to warm up, we spend extra snuggle time and let them guide us at their own pace.

If your dog experiences stress colitis during their stay, we’ll reach out immediately. Usually, it appears as loose stool. With your permission, we may give our anti-diarrheal treatment or add pumpkin to their meals, and if needed, we’ll add rice to help stabilize digestion.

We’ll keep you informed every step of the way and notify you immediately if anything changes. Our goal is for every pup to have a positive, stress-free experience at the Ranch.
